How to Build a Litecoin (Scrypt) Mining Rig

Mining Scrypt cryptocoins like Litecoins, can be very profitable, especially in the long run. We have made a tutorial that will give you a very decent Scrypt mining rig, that will produce around 1,2 Mh/s (1200 Kh/s). The total cost to create such a rig is around $1250.

For this rig, we have used the following components, which are available on Newegg, Amazon or any other electronics webshop.

GPU: 2x Sapphire TOXIC Amd Radeon R9 280X
Motherboard: ASRock 990FX Extreme3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s
CPU: AMD Sempron 145
PSU: Corsair RM1000 Gold-Certified
RAM Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB)
HDD: 500GB Hard Drive
Wi-fi Dongle: Netgear N300 USB WiFi Adapter
4GB Thumb Drive
2x Plastic Milk Crates for the housing
2x PCI-E PCI Express 16X Riser
Vantacor Power Motherboard Switch
Wooden Yardstick
Zipties

Assembling the Mining Rig

We advice that you add a tile on the bottom of your milk crate to create a platform for your Motherboard to rest on. Tile’s are made from stone and therefore are heat resistant. I would not advice that you use cardboard or any other inflammable objects in your mining rig. The first thing we have to do is to prepare our motherboard. Attach the memory, GPU, CPU and fan. Double check that you have plugged the CPU fan into the right connector.

After you have done that, we can position the Motherboard in the milk crate. Aditionally you can use screws to secure the Motherboard to the crate. I have used a yardstick as a platform to let my GPU’s rest on, while I connect them to the Motherboard with the powered X16 risers. I ziptied the GPU’s to make sure they were secured and couldn’t fall off the yardstick. After that I connected everything else, and made sure everything was properly fitted within the milk crate. Then I went on and used my second milk crate to put the PSU in. I stocked it under my rig like this:

After that, I installed Windows from a bootable thumbdrive. Please keep in mind that if you want to save the cost of Windows, you could also go with Linux. This will save you about $100, as Linux is a free operating system. When the OS was setup, I installed CGminer, and installed the drivers for the GPU’s. I started mining Litecoins on my rig, and this were the hash rates:
